The Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (HKDSE), often referred to as the Hong Kong Credentials of Secondary Education, is the official public examination and qualification awarded upon completion of senior secondary education in Hong Kong. Introduced in 2012, the HKDSE replaced the former dual system of the Hong Kong Certificate of Education Examination (HKCEE) at the end of Secondary 5 and the Hong Kong Advanced Level Examination (HKALE) at the end of Secondary 7. This reform aligned with the New Senior Secondary (NSS) curriculum, extending free education to 12 years and streamlining the pathway: six years of primary, three years of junior secondary (compulsory), and three years of senior secondary (Secondary 4–6). The change aimed to provide all students broader access to senior secondary education, reduce exam pressure from multiple high-stakes tests, and allow more time for holistic learning, including non-academic experiences.
The HKDSE assesses students through a standards-referenced reporting system, with results graded from Level 1 to Level 5 (with 5 and 5 for top performance) in most subjects, and “Attained” or “Unattained” for Citizenship and Social Development. Students typically take four core subjects—Chinese Language, English Language, Mathematics, and Citizenship and Social Development—plus two to three electives from Category A (senior secondary academic subjects like Physics, Biology, History, or Economics), Category B (Applied Learning vocational courses), or Category C (other languages such as French or Japanese).
The examination, held annually in March to May, evaluates knowledge, critical thinking, problem-solving, and communication skills. It opens doors to local undergraduate programs via the Joint University Programmes Admissions System (JUPAS), vocational training, employment, or international higher education. Over 1,000 overseas institutions recognize HKDSE results, often equating Level 3 to international benchmarks like GCSE C grades or A-level equivalents, facilitating direct entry to universities worldwide.
