Founded in 1922 as the American Society of Clinical Pathologists, ASCP emerged from a meeting in St. Louis, Missouri, where physicians sought to advance clinical pathology as a distinct medical specialty. Its original goals focused on education, scientific exchange, charitable efforts, and promoting high standards in laboratory medicine. Over the decades, ASCP has pioneered numerous “firsts” in the field: it established the Board of Registry (now the ASCP Board of Certification, or BOC) in 1928 as the first U.S. certification agency for laboratory personnel, initially for technicians and later expanding to various credentials. In 1936, ASCP collaborated with the American Medical Association to create the American Board of Pathology, formalizing board certification for pathologists in anatomic and clinical pathology.
In 2001–2002, reflecting its inclusive evolution, the organization changed its name to the American Society for Clinical Pathology to better encompass non-physician laboratory professionals, who had been welcomed as full members since the 1970s (with associate categories starting in 1968). This shift strengthened advocacy, education, and representation for the entire laboratory team.
Today, ASCP’s mission centers on providing excellence in education, certification, and advocacy to improve patient care. It offers extensive continuing education through journals (e.g., American Journal of Clinical Pathology, Lab Medicine, Critical Values), online courses, virtual meetings, and the renowned ASCP Annual Meeting. The ASCP BOC administers globally recognized certifications (e.g., MLS(ASCP), CT(ASCP), HTL(ASCP)) that ensure competency and have issued over 650,000 credentials. Advocacy efforts address workforce shortages, reimbursement, and policy issues in Washington, D.C., while promoting diversity, equity, and innovation in laboratory medicine.
With a century of leadership—celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2022—ASCP remains committed to advancing pathology and laboratory science, fostering collaboration, and ensuring high-quality diagnostics that directly benefit patients worldwide.
