
The University of Wuppertal (BUW) is a research institution located in Wuppertal, North Rhine-Westphalia. BUW Urkunde Muster, Founded in 1972, the university merged existing higher education institutions in the region, such as the Faculty of Engineering, the Faculty of Industrial Arts, and the Faculty of Education, and expanded with new departments.
The combination of disciplines offered by BUW is relatively unheard of in the German university system. For example, its degree programs are unique in Germany in interdisciplinary collaborations between the Faculties of Engineering and Economics, or in the field of safety engineering. The university offers courses in both English and German. BUW has three campuses: Grifflenburg (its main campus, situated in a massive, cut-out honeycomb concrete structure), Freudenburg (both located in Elberfeld, a suburb of Wuppertal), and Haspel in Unterbarmen.

The University of Wuppertal is particularly strong in entrepreneurship and marketing programs, which provide young entrepreneurs with a springboard into the workforce and have earned BUW a high reputation among German universities for many years. For six years starting in 2004, BUW housed the second supercomputer among German universities. ALiCEnext was used in elementary particle physics, applied computer science, astroparticle physics, and experimental high-energy physics.
The student body comprises 13,000 students from over 100 countries, supported by approximately 300 professors and higher education professionals. Notable alumni include Christian Boros, founder of a German advertising agency and art collector; Godela Habel, abstract painter; and Walter Heidenfels, industrial designer.
The University of Wuppertal comprises seven faculties: Humanities and Cultural Studies, Business and Economics, Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Architecture, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Safety Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Information Technology and Media Technology, Design and Art, and Education and Social Sciences.
