The institution traces its origins to 1967, when Ontario’s Minister of Education, Bill Davis, established the province’s public college system amid Canada’s centennial celebrations. George Brown College of Applied Arts and Technology was founded by amalgamating the Provincial Institute of Trades and the Provincial Institute of Trades and Occupations. Named after George Brown—a key Father of Confederation, reformer, journalist, and advocate for public education—the college opened its doors on March 1, 1968, with 2,009 students and 187 instructors across initial sites near Casa Loma and in Kensington Market.

Over the decades, George Brown grew into one of Toronto’s premier polytechnics, reflecting its deep roots in applied education.
