Fiji National University (FNU) is Fiji’s leading public university and the country’s first national university. FNU Diploma Template, Formally established on February 15, 2010, under the Fiji National University Act 2009, it was created by merging six major government tertiary institutions to provide accessible, inclusive higher education aligned with national development needs.
Although young as a unified university, FNU draws on a rich legacy spanning over 140 years. Its founding colleges trace roots to institutions like the Suva Medical School (established in 1885 for training vaccinators), the Fiji Institute of Technology (formerly a key technical college), and others focused on medicine, nursing, education, agriculture, business, and vocational training. This merger created a dual-sector institution blending technical and vocational education and training (TVET) with higher education programs, emphasizing practical skills, experiential learning, and real-world application.

FNU operates through multiple campuses and centers—around 17 main ones plus additional sites, totaling up to 40 locations across Fiji’s islands. Key campuses include Nasinu (administrative hub and teacher training center), Samabula/Derrick (engineering and technology focus), Koronivia (agriculture), Labasa, Lautoka, Nadi, and specialized sites like the Fiji Maritime Academy. This widespread network ensures education reaches urban and rural communities nationwide.
The university enrolls approximately 20,000 to 26,000 students (with recent years showing record growth, including over 26,000 in 2024), supported by about 1,800 to 2,000 staff. It offers around 300 programs, ranging from certificates and diplomas to bachelor’s, postgraduate diplomas, master’s, and doctoral degrees. Disciplines cover agriculture, fisheries and forestry; business, hospitality, and tourism; engineering and technical vocational education; humanities, education, and law; medicine, nursing, and health sciences; plus maritime studies and productivity training.
